House Overrides Vetoes
The House of Delegates voted to override a number of Governor Ehrlich’s vetoes Saturday. Today, the Senate will seek to do the same. Contact your Senators and urge them to uphold the vetoes of two bills that would have a negative impact on the business community.
HB 1713 would give the Maryland General Assembly authority to review, and possibly reject, the merger between Constellation Energy Group and FPL Group. The national business community is watching this legislation closely. This unprecedented attempt to stop or severely impair a merger between two private companies will warn other employers, who may be looking to locate or expand in Maryland, that this State’s government is hostile to business.
HB 1215 would block the State Board of Education’s efforts to restructure the governance of certain chronically underperforming Baltimore City schools. By blocking the remedial steps proposed by the State Board of Education, HB 1215 will delay badly needed reforms to certain schools in Baltimore City that are failing to provide their students a thorough education. Enactment of this bill could jeopardize $171 million in federal education funds for all 24 counties, according to a letter from the U.S. Department of Education, due to noncompliance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
