Election Spotlight: District 31 Senate Race
Over the course of the next week, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most hotly contested state legislative races.
Today we’ll focus in on the Senate race in District 31 in Anne Arundel County. The seat is vacant after the retirement of Sen. Phil Jimeno. The candidates running to replace Jimeno are Walter Shandrowsky (D) and Bryan Simonaire(R). The Baltimore Sun took a closer look at this race last week. View the complete story here.
Walt Shandrowsky (D)
Shandrowsky is a retired manufacturers representative, who served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1979 to 1982. In his response to the Maryland Chamber’s candidate questionnaire, he said the three key issues of his campaign are:
Excessive partisanship- Issues, including those important to business, are being passed or rejected based solely on the party membership of the sponsor.
Education- We must ensure that our educational system is adequately preparing our students to not only satisfy the demand for qualified workers, but also to enable our graduates to compete in the global economy with graduates from high achieving foreign countries.
Cost of government- the people whom I seek to represent, individuals and business people alike expect their legislators to keep the cost of government commensurate with the public’s willingness to finance it.

Bryan Simonaire (R)
Simonaire is a computer systems engineer running for office for the first time. In his response to the Maryland Chamber’s candidate questionnaire, he said the three key issues of his campaign are:
Accountability in Education – An educated work force is crucial to the success of any business.
Affordable Health Care – Health care costs are out of control and often employers are required to pay the brunt of the costs. I will work to make sure small business owners can band together to form AHPs and work to improve medical liability.
Taxes – I have signed the no-new tax pledge and will oppose any and all efforts by legislators in Annapolis to increase state revenue through increased taxes.
