Election Spotlight: District 27B House Race

Over the course of the next week, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most hotly contested state legislative races.

Today we’ll focus in on the House race in District 27B in Calvert County. Del. Sue Kullen is being challenged by David Hale, President of the Calvert County Board of Commissioners (R). The Washington Post has covered this race here, and here.

Del. Sue Kullen (D)
Kullen was appointed to the House of Delegates in 2004, when Del. George W. Owings III (D) was selected by the Governor to run the state Department of Veterans Affairs. In her response to the Maryland Chamber’s candidate questionnaire, she said the three key issues of her campaign are:

  1. Education - we all benefit when graduates excel.

  2. Environment – it is our health and economic engine of the future.

  3. Healthcare – access to affordable health care how to be accomplished through partnership and creativity. Business has to meet the table.

David Hale (R)
David Hale was elected to the Calvert County Board of Commissioners in 1998 and again in 2002. In his response to the Maryland Chamber’s candidate questionnaire, he said the three key issues of his campaign are:
  1. Create an economic environment that allows our current business to grow and attracts new businesses to Maryland.
  2. Allow the free market to work in Maryland including electrical rates. Deregulation capped rates in 1999 and the action taken during the 2006 Special Session only extended the rate caps. We cannot continue to claim a deregulated marketplace when government sets rate caps when it benefits the politicians.
  3. Increase the capacity of our Bus Rapid Transit system by adding buses, routes and park-n-ride lots to the existing infrastructure. This is a non-controversial, well-liked system that is relatively inexpensive while also being very effective in increasing the capacity of our transportation system.
