News & Notes for January 8, 2007

Tough decisions loom in Annapolis
“The economy has changed. We recognize it,” said Maryland Chamber of Commerce President Kathleen T. Snyder. “We would like to see such a study group comprised of tax experts, economists … not just people saying, ‘Oh, we’ve got a $1 billion hole, here’s $1 billion in taxes we can raise.’”

Legislative leaders talk taxes with business groups
Since it only raises about $200 million, “why don’t we just eliminate the corporate income tax?” Middleton asked. “Expanding the retail sales tax would be a good trade off.” This could mean applying the 5 percent rate to services, such as car care, advertising, accounting and other services that are currently not taxed.

‘Clean car’ idea gains momentum
Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller threw his support yesterday behind legislation to require tougher emissions standards for new cars sold in the state, giving a major boost to a top goal of environmentalists.

Keiffer Mitchell to run for mayor
“I’m in the race no matter what, no matter who’s in it,” said Mitchell, 39, a married father of two and scion of one of Baltimore’s best-known political families.
