Comparative Fault Hearing is Today
HB 110, the Maryland Comparative Negligence Act, will be heard today in the House Judiciary Committee. Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Ron Wineholt has been working all week to line up panels of business representatives to testify in opposition of the legislation. Today, the Judiciary Committee will hear from representatives from a number of industries, including legal, insurance, health care, small business, CPAs, local governments, and more.
The Maryland Chamber strongly opposes this bill, which would replace Maryland’s standard of contributory negligence with a standard of comparative fault. If passed, this bill would needlessly overturn 150 years of Maryland case law and expose Maryland businesses to more lawsuits and greater damage awards. You can view the Maryland Chamber’s position statement here.
We encourage you to contact your legislators and urge them to oppose efforts to replace contributory negligence with comparative fault. For more information, and to take action, click here.
