Chamber Advocates Legislation to Limit Appeal Bonds
Yesterday, the Maryland Chamber urged the House Judiciary Committee to support HB 807, legislation that would limit the total appeal bond necessary to stay enforcement of a judgment to no more than $100 million in class action cases.
“We believe that businesses should not be forced into bankruptcy simply to exercise their right of appeal,” said Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Ron Wineholt. “At a time when multi-hundred million dollar verdicts are not unheard of, it makes sense to place a reasonable limit on appeal bonds.”
More than 30 states have enacted some form of appeal bond limitation, including regional competitors like Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
