Chamber Supports Governor's State Budget Cuts

The Board of Public Works voted today to approve Governor Martin O’Malley’s first round of state budget cuts. The Maryland Chamber supports the Governor’s efforts to cut the state budget.

“This is a difficult, but necessary, first step in putting the state’s fiscal house in order”, said Kathy Snyder, President and CEO of the Maryland Chamber. She noted that while some of the budget cuts will be difficult to sustain over the long term for higher education institutions and health care providers, a balance of spending reductions, additional revenues, and approval of slot machines is necessary to close the state’s long term $1.5 billion structural deficit. “We commend the Governor for reducing state spending in this first round of budget cuts and look forward to identifying additional solutions in the upcoming months” said Snyder.
